by David Gonzalez on 3 May 2006
On May 2, 2006, President Bush declared a major disaster for the State of Hawaii triggering the release of Federal funds to help people and communities recover from the severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that occurred February 20 to April 2, 2006.
For your edification attached is the Disaster Fact Sheet which provides details on this declaration (DR-1640). Also attached is A Guide to the Disaster Declaration Process that outlines the process involved in the declaration and the types of disaster assistance available. This information has also been sent to your offices in Washington DC.
FEMA will have a Congressional Liaison Officer (CLO) on the ground there in Hawaii to coordinate with you beginning next week. Once the CLO arrives that individual will provide you with his/her local contact phone and fax numbers.
Currently FEMA's full time congressional liaison is in transit and will be back in the Regional office in Oakland, California tomorrow. In the interim, should you require additional information please feel free to contact the individuals listed on the Fact Sheet in Washington DC, or this office.
