PRESS RELEASE

January 4, 2008

Mayor Charmaine Tavares responds to the announcement made earlier today by the Hawaii Superferry to add a second daily trip to Kahului Harbor “I am very disappointed that Hawaii Superferry has made this decision without consulting county officials and members of our community. Since the Superferry’s first arrival less than a month ago it continues to be a contentious matter for many in our community.

Just weeks ago I received a commitment from Mr. Garibaldi that the company would extend its efforts to work with us, but their announcement comes as a surprise.

We have no information suggesting that there has been compliance with Judge August’s ruling, issued 2 months ago, that requires the State Department of Transportation to complete a study of traffic impacts and how to mitigate such impacts. Next month, on February 25, the county will be back in court with Judge August for a previously scheduled court date to review DOT’s compliance with the judge’s previous orders.

The traffic study was deemed necessary for the one daily trip by the Superferry to Kahului Harbor and now there will be two daily trips - and still no traffic study to comply with Judge August’s ruling.”

Maui to have two HSF trips a day

[Editor's Note: Our interpretation of this announcement is that HSF corporation has given up on the Kauai schedule through 2009. Whoopie!]

by John Garibaldi on 4 January 2008

I wanted to let you know that we have just received approval on our filing with the Public Utilities Commission requesting the addition of a second voyage between Maui and O‘ahu. We will announce this additional voyage to Maui today and begin service on January 16, 2008.

A second voyage to Maui was originally planned to begin when the second vessel was placed into service in early 2009. A second voyage to Maui will better accommodate customers who want the convenience of having an afternoon voyage and give commercial users more flexibility in reaching their markets.

Providing service to Kaua‘i is very important to us. We recognize and appreciate the strong support from many in the community. We’ve decided, however, to initiate a second daily voyage to Maui sooner in order to allow more time in which to work with the community on Kaua‘i to ensure a safe, successful resumption of service. This is necessary because, as we have always stated, our business model is dependent on running two trips per day and right now we’ve got to meet those needs.

The second voyage between Maui and O‘ahu will operate Sunday through Friday and will leave Honolulu at 3:15 p.m. arriving in Kahului at 7:00 p.m.; departing Kahului at 8:00 p.m. and arriving in Honolulu at 11:00 p.m.

I hope to have your support and always appreciate your suggestions or comments. Please feel free to contact me.
