Testimony in Support of HB1577 relating to Genetically Modified Coffee
Submitted to the Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection
Date February 1, 2007
Time: 8:00 a.m.
Place: Conference Room 312
Submitted by: (your name here)

Chairperson Morita and Vice -Chair Carroll and members of the committee:
Here are some talking points. Please submit testimony in your own words. That is the most effective method.

Hawaii coffees are vulnerable to contamination by gmo coffees if they were to be planted outside, either in field trials or commercial plantings. A certain amount of cross pollination will occur, creating a gmo crop in the very first generation. This would be disastrous to the Hawaii Coffee industry. GMO coffees are not specialty coffees. Hawaii coffees are sold within the gourmet, specialty market. Planting gmo coffees would also ruin the export market.

This bill allows for the research in the laboratory.

This bill takes away no jobs in Hawaii. It protects a viable and vibrant industry in our state.
