Route 57 Old Shade Tree
Deep crevices line the face
of this ancient tree,
sunlight and bird song
fall on its mossy feet.

Old, gnarled, and mysterious, this tree evoked thoughts of gnomes hiding in the crevices. In many cases the largest trees we found were yard trees or shade trees near farmhouses. Everything else was clear cut over a hundred years ago for lumber or fields. Another place to find big trees is down in the ravines and along the creeks, where it was too much trouble to get them. We found this tree on the west side of Route 57 between Route 86 and Route 314 in the Town of Ellery.
